Below the Banda sea and to the north of Australia lies the island of
Timor-Leste. Originally, Timor was a crocodile, but formed into land
after the crocodile died. Thus it is that the crocodiles are respected
as the ancestors of all life. Those who are eaten by them have been
eaten for a reason. As a land, the crocodile is mountainous and dry when
the rains don't come. For many years it was occupied by the Portuguese,
then by the Indonesians. Both ruled more with violence than
benevolence. In 2002 Timor-Leste became the newest country in the world.
Among the first things that the people of this tiny crocodile nation
did was cover their bodies in tattoos.
